Slightly Puzzled

Although a long time lover of Losey's "The Go Between", I have always been slightly puzzled by one feature. Why are the famous opening lines of the novel transfered from the old Leo and given to the voice of Alan Bates? Can anyone offer a suggestion?

reply

In my many viewings of this film, I have always thought that those opening lines were spoken by Michael Redgrave, not Alan Bates.

Non ho dovuto mai dormire sotto quell'arco!
Bene, forse una volta, due volte.

reply

Yes, the voice-over is by Michael Redgrave.

reply

And it's him as the adult Marcus in the 'present' of the novel, the 1950s.

reply

Marcus? Who's Marcus? Just when I thought I understood this story, someone named Marcus pops up!

I thought Redgrave played Old Leo.
