My favorite post-apocalyptic movie.

No mohawked muscle freaks, no rampaging cyborgs, no abominable mutants; just two simpleminded teenagers on a quest for the mythical city of Metropolis, which they learned about in a comic book obtained from an elderly traveling 'magician'.

The nostalgic huckster/'magician' is hilarious, with his routine of old household devices and a scratchy, warbling record player playing an old Rolling Stones 45. A favorite moment was when he was about to cook a meal for the two young leads in his trailer: "Let's see what we've got... Canned oysters, ketchup, peanut butter... The Indonesians used to cook with peanut butter. I guess we'll have an Indonesian meal... Nasi goreng... Nasi goreng..."

It's very funny in some parts, but also very sad. If you like post-apocalyptic SF and are tired of all the overblown Road Warrior and Terminator cliches, seek this one out. It seems a lot more real than the style we're used to.
