'Can you make a baby?'

Why did Juan ask this the guy with the glasses? What does this line have to do with anything? Why did the guy answer no? Is he sterile or something? It's probably something obvious that I don't get for whatever reason, but it really bugs me.

I think what Juan (Rod Stieger) was getting at was "you are all talk, but when it comes down to it, can you back it up?" I don't think the richer was saying he couldn't make a baby so much as he was too stunned and scared to give a proper answer (ie he was impotent due to Juan's power/gun/penis sticking in his face).

Or per the social commentary Leone might have been making: it is easy for the wealthy to talk about what should be done about the poor and the world, but in the end they are nothing BUT talk... they do not have the balls to actually do the hard work or spend their own money to make the change they say is so important.

Or at least that is how I took it.

Its caz he takes the wife out back...

reply

Nah, it's much simpler. It's just a common "Hey, I got bigger balls than you" offence, while he's confronting the rich guy face-to-face. A way to tell him his weak despite all his wealth.
No hidden meanings, just that.

reply

Exactly. I read it like:
"Can you make a baby? Oh, you can't. Ok, I'll make one for you then..." and then goes with the lady.
