Coulda been the best Leone if Eli Wallach had played Juan Miranda

Seriously, Rod Steiger is unbearable. Such an interesting, great movie anyways. But man, if only Eli Wallach could have had that role.

May have been.

Hard to say. The actor was fine and Eli already played a similar role. It's like asking Eastwood to star in Once Upon a Time in the West. Good, but needs some variety.

reply

Disagree with this. I don't find Eastwood's Leone characters to be similar to Bronson's. Harmonica is definitely more like Lee Van Cleef in For a Few Dollars More.

reply

Eastwood WAS actually approached to play harmonica but passed on it.

reply

That's a false piece of trivia. Eastwood was supposed to be one of the three men at the beginning who harmonica shoots

Eli is 1000000 times better than Clint tho so Eli would have been great.

Agreed. Eli Wallach was made to order for the Miranda role. A wasteful shame.

reply

I, respectfully, disagree. I think Rod Steiger did a great job with the role. I'm not saying Eli Wallach would have been bad, but I have no complaints about Rod Steiger's performance.

reply

I agree. Wallach, a fine actor indeed, has never been a truly sympathetic character - or likeable. Great at playing utter bastards though.

reply

Pretty sure Eli was asked --- Steiger, as much of a PITA he is on set IS a much better actor, and carried the part better
