Two unexplained things - are they in the book?

I wonder if anyone here has read the book this film is based on, and if it provides any greater depth to...

What is the mistake that Jack made when he visited Brumby at home?
"I made a mistake" as he laughs. Was it that he thought Brumby was a hardened crim like the Fletchers and Kinnear and on seeing him at home, Jack realised he wasn't a big player ... until the film?

WHen Eric says about being nosey "That's not always a good way to be" and Jack says "Well you should know"
Some history there with Jack and Eric. Is there an actual backstory or was it just some scene-setting dialogue to hint at their history and hatred?

I read the book a few years ago. With your second point, yes there is. Jack Carter and his brother years before had been playing pool in a youth club. Eric and some of his yobbish mates came in and started causing trouble. When Jack's brother chastised them, Eric had a go at him and won. Jack thought that because Eric was harder, he would side with him. As time went on he realised that Eric was a twat and secretly felt ashamed of siding with Eric against his brother.
That is the best that I can remember it anyway!

That’s brilliant. Thanks very much for answering.
