Got 30 minutes in and fell asleep. Yeah watching a foreigner walking around talking about god knows what and two cops driving around looking at Italians. No thanks. This movie is trash.

I think he's referring to "French Connection II" -- which is indeed a step down from this classic (though the final shot ... literally ... makes the uneven experience well worth it).

I frankly didn't like this movie that much. It was okay but I don't get how it won 5 Oscars over Fiddler on the Roof and A Clockwork Orange.

A clockwork orange is without exaggerating, a billion times better than the French connection.

Clockwork Orange losing all four nominations including Best Picture is probably my all-time Oscar sore spot (Shawshank being second). Nonetheless, French Connection is a great movie and well deserved its wins.

it's true, the first hour is really slow and kind of boring, but then in the last 40 minutes the movie takes off with some really gripping chase scenes.

IMO it was a little boring in the beginning but I stuck with it and it was very much worth my time. I would say on my scale it was 9/10. Very Good.

To each his own I guess.

I think you missed the whole point of the boring action.
This movie hit it big because it tried a gritty, realistic take on police drama.
It was innovative and fresh, and it made it interesting and new to be that close to such menial but realistic details.
See how it contrasts all that footwork with bursts of intense, nail biting action like the epic car chase.

I agree that it's extremist and can feel boring at times, but there's a purpose and if you get its meaning you won't call it trash no more.
