The music

I've always loved this film and revisit it every 5-10 years or so. Only on my latest viewing though have I noticed how bloody awful the composition is. It's a real cacophony and doesn't fit with the scenes at all.

And 20 minutes into the movie the Bass (?) sounds very much like "Jaws", and this movie has Roy Scheider as well - Hmmm

I actually like the score. The music that plays when Popeye is trailing Charnier was actually on an album Don Ellis did.

I love the score!
It’s dissonant, angular and gritty, like NYC in the film

The OP misses the point of the score completely. It's meant to be jarring, unnerving - the perfect accompaniment to this brutal film. It's not meant to be a pleasant listen, but to compliment the mood of the film. OP: did you you really not get that?

the final composition is really eerie. Loved it.

I have always found it creepy. Maybe a hint at Friedkin's next project?
