Early Gay Expose.
This expose of what men do to men in prison was a screen first for its time.
Truman Capote's TV movie, THE GLASS HOUSE, starring Alan Alda and Vic
Morrow was in 1974. I was the Film Programer at Long Island University
and chose this and tied it in with my sociology course on male sexual
violence and rape. The film created a sensation and was talked about for
weeks. Two years later, actor Sal Mineo was murdered while directing a
stage version of FORTUNE in LA. This film, I might ad, helped me in my
coming out. I met my first boyfriend who was a teacher at my school, as
well as other gay friends through it. Wendell Burton's only other role
of importance was as Liza Minelli's boyfriend in THE STERILE CUCKOO.
In 1989, a stage version was produced in San Diego. I helped stage it as
co-producer as I knew the director and had a video of FORTUNE. The
rehearsals went smoothly once we found the right actors willing to
undertake roles requiring nudity, roughhouse, and screaming. I wanted
it to be as realistic as possible. The audience cheered and applauded
with gusto. The drag show was omitted since it took away from the
somber noirness we strived for. See it if you can on DVD/Video.
