When does this movie take place?

I haven't seen this movie in about 20 years, when we used to watch it in library for the first few years of elementary school. I don't even remember it being a musical but the fact that all my searches of it lead me to soundtracks...
Anyway, I was tryin to remember the era of the movie. I thought it was set in "the olden days," but looking at pictures online it doesn't seem very far off from when it was made. Of course, all the period films of the '60s and '70s have decidedly '60s and '70s hairstyles, which makes it hard to tell...but there is the case of the length of skirts, which are too short for turn-of-the-century era. Anyway, does anyone know around when it takes place?

It was a contemporary film - in that it was set at the time it was filmed - 1970/71,

Of course it was filmed in Ireland - and Ireland was 10 years behind every other country at the time - maybe more in the more isolated rural areas.

Thanks...I actually finally just saw it again! It was very entertaining. I think when we used to watch it in Library (in elementary school) they showed us an edited version because there are whole scenes that I have absolutely no memory of AT ALL, while others are vaguely familiar, and then there are those that I remember clearly.

Its a fun movie to watch as there are alot of Dublin locations.

I remember seeing it as a kid when it first came out - much was made about the re-teaming of the two stars from OLIVER.

Its also actually the only movie where you get to see the original Dublin Airport terminal building in operation. The building is still there now, but used as an office - its dwarfed by the enormous terminal building that was build in the 1970's.

Maybe 10 years behind America, the UK was much the same as Ireland back then.
