Dorothy McGuire - beautifully brilliant

I saw this movie when I was about eight years old and it scared me more than any movie I've seen since. Apart form the scariness, as a kid, the thing that stood out for me was the lovely warmth of the grannie, played by Dorothy McGuire. She was feisty, funny and devoted, and she seemed to me to be the epitome of love. I've always had the word "synamagogue" stuck in my head too!

Recently, I watched Flight of the Doves again. And gosh, what a great movie it is!

The two guys i found as a kid to be scary and nasty, Ron Moody and William Rushton, are perfectly hilarious as the evil relatives of the two cute kids. But just like the first time around, I was aching for Granny to get on the screen.

I think Dorothy McGuire is the most warm, engaging and endearing person to have ever be in movies. I wish she had been my granny. I'd love to read more about her, I think she must have been a lovely person. And her Irish accent was very convincing, I thought she must have been born there, especially with her name.

She reminds me a lot of Susannah York.

I saw the film when it was first released and loved Ms. McGuire's performance. The movie...not so much.
