The oldest 36 year old man in movie history!

Topol looked 60 years old then. Always amazed when I think he was only in his 30's.

reply

He looked to be in his mid 40's - early 50's. Certainly not 60.

Tongue-tied and twisted, just an earth-bound misfit, I

reply

Yes, 60, not 30s or 40s. And Golde looked old too. I was wondering why the last 2 kids were so young.

reply

If you're agreeing with him why are you replying to me?

reply

I'm a little late to the party here, but this is a strange question. I'm not entirely sure what you mean? When you put up a post, people may agree or disagree with you. Isn't this the norm? I actually agreed and disagreed with you. Not sure what you're talking about, and I will probably never know since it's 6 months later.

reply

It seemed like you were responding to him, but hit reply to me. That's all.

My car is fast, my teeth is shiny, I tell all the girls they can kiss my heinie!

reply

They portrayed rural people who lived before modern medicine and cosmetics.

Topol played Tevye in the Broadway revival of FOTR decades after the movie.

Someone who saw the play compared the play Tevya to the movie Tevya. In the play, he exuded energy and bounded across the stage...unlike the movie Tevya's plodding around like he had lead in his shoes.

Topol said "when I was in my 30's that's how I thought 60 year old people move - now that I'm that age and I know what I can do!"

Cogito ergo spud. I think, therefore I yam.

reply

People aged quickly back then because they lived very difficult lives. Considering that Tzeitel was only about 20, that would make her parents in their 40s. It makes sense that the parents would look older. I look at pictures of my grandparents and great-grandparents when they were in their 30s or 40s and think how old they look.

reply

Yes, but in that time and in that era, wouldn't Tevye really be about 36 anyway? Tzeitel wasn't yet 20, that would mean he got married to Golde when he was about 17 or 18. It sounds about right that he should be 36.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

reply

In Pirkei Avot (a Jewish book called "Ethics of our Fathers"), it says that Jewish men should get married at 18 years of age.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

reply

Well, they've been married 25 years, so I take back what I said - Tevye has gotta be in his mid-40s.

reply

I dunno...16 year old boys getting married to 13 year old girls during that era wasn't unheard of.

reply

I am sitting here watching it for the first time in a long time, and I just discovered Topol was 36 when he made this. He definitely looked older than that, but not 60. I was 12 when this movie was released. We went to see it as 6th graders I think. 45 years ago! Every now and then I realize how old I am and go...wait...what??

1) Chaim Topol was always known for playing characters much older than himself. In his first big international hit, Sallah, he played a man in his 40s when he himself was still in his 20s. Lee J. Cobb was also known for being able to do this.

2) In real life, Tevya and Golde are probably no older than their early 40s. But the kind of hard, poverty-stricken lives they led will age you prematurely.

reply

In the book, it is specified that Tevye and Golde were 14 and 13 when they got married. So they would be late 30s at the most when the play takes place.
