Kind of similar movie late '80s-early '90s

In the early '90s, I saw a VHS movie whose title I can't recall for the life of me. It was reminiscent of Equinox, in that it was about youths encountering demonic forces on a camping trip. One creature chews one girl's flesh off and tosses away what's left (an almost scary part), and when the hero reads the book of magic he uses to confront the demons, he becomes bald and pointy-eared LOL. Anyone know which movie I mean? I remember shortly afterwards telling a friend of mine at work, and she seemed amused.

There were alot of those in the 80s and 90s.

Not sure, but Evil Dead had a similar plot, and the movie Waxwork had the barrier premise.
