"Uncle Leo?"

reply

Yes, I really hope there will be a separate release, I already have Jaws and JP's on Blu. Duel is so *beep* awesome, I wonder if they will make it widescreen of keep it in it's TV ratio.

Pretty sure it'll be 1.33:1. Spielberg shot it in that ratio, so how he framed everything would look all wrong if it was cropped to widescreen.

Most likely, as Gone With The Wind & The Wizard Of Oz weren't tampered with. I'm not sure if if Duel was screened though in widescreen after they released it in theaters after the success of Jaws, or if they just screened it in its TV ratio. Hmm...

Here's the first review I've seen of the box set, and Duel has indeed been reformatted to 1.85:1. According to the reviewer, it looks fantastic.

Update: DVD Beaver just posted its review, including comparison screenshots. It does look very good.

Like I said, I'll be pissed off if it's in widescreen. That is NOT how it was shot!

It looks great at 1:85:1. There was an interview many years ago Spielberg did where he basically said that while the film was composed initially for 1:33:1 TV broadcast, he filmed with spherical lenses and framed the images to allow reformatting to 1:85:1 if required.

Some director's would later go on to use a similar system called Super35 which allows the film to be formatted to a specific aspect ratio at a later date. T2 was famously filmed in Super35, then formatted to 2:40:1 for theatrical release.

This presentation is the European theatrical cut which was presented at 1:85:1 during release.

reply

Cameron also shot The Abyss in Super35, and Fincher used it for Seven. In fact, there are two Blu-ray releases for Seven: in 1.78:1 and 2.35:1.

Criterion offers three aspect ratios of On The Waterfront. In 1954, only a limited number of theaters were projecting in 1.66:1 and 1.85:1, so Kazan framed the images with that in mind.

Kubrick, too. Technical assistant Leon Vitali said that after Kubrick disliked the way theaters projected Barry Lyndon (1.85 instead of 1.66), he changed how he composed his movies. "From 1976 onward, he realized that his films were going to be shown in 1.85 whether he liked it or not.

"Making The Shining and Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut, Stanley had marks on the camera lens so he could see where the 1.85 lines were. He composed his shots for 1.66, which is the full screen, but the film wouldn't be hurt by going to 1.85."

The interviewer then says "So he did the reverse of what most directors do, who look at the 'TV Safe Area'; Stanley looked at the '1.85 Safe Area'."

That's why his movies didn't really suffer visually when shown on TV or first seen on video (with the exception of 2001 and Spartacus)

Oh man, I'd be sooooo pissed if it's not in it's original TV ratio. But Spielberg has a lot of clout. I can't imagine he'd allow them to tamper with it. I'm certain the original TV aspect ratio will be preserved.

reply

The cinema version was re-framed in 1.85.1., so both aspect ratios are correct. The Blu-ray is in 1.85.1. as you can see on the following link:

http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/multi_comparison.php?disc1=4 880&disc2=4881&hd_multiID=1993#auswahl

I personally think it looks better in 1.85.1. I think it makes it look more cinematic and look more like a real film and not just a standard TV-film, like the 1.33.1 version looks like.

This is unfortunate :(

As was the norm for television content at the time, Duel was filmed to be shown in a 1.33:1 (4:3) aspect ratio, but for this Blu-ray release the film has been reformatted to a 1.85:1 aspect ratio which is a common current film aspect ratio that fills up the majority of a widescreen TV. The problem with this reformation is that the image is not what Spielberg intended for the audience to see, and approximately 28% of the picture is gone. This is a big problem because at times there is crucial information that is missing from the screen.

Unsurprisingly, the short documentaries included in the special features have not been reformatted. The people who complain about black bars on their televisions generally are not the same people who bother to watch bonus features, yet Universal held those people in higher regard when formatting this release. For the best Duel experience, the previously released DVD is still the best option, sadly.

It works now.

Well, they released the movies in the Universal Classic Monsters Blu-ray box set as standalone releases eventually, staggering the release dates of the films in doing so.

If Universal follows that as an example, we might be seeing the release of Duel as a stand alone release as early as June to as late as September.

Why do they say things are a dime a dozen

U is releasing it on May 5/15. It's up for pre-order on Amazon.

The blu-ray arrived yesterday, it looks stunning.

The picture is so clear you see the truck diver (Carey Loftin) a few times.

I've since received mine, and it is indeed stunning! Such a wonderful film, you wouldn't even know it was a TV movie!
