"Nairobi, South Africa"?

The woman/gorilla was announced to have been born in "Nairobi, South Africa".

Was this obvious error made on purpose? E.g. to show how ignorant and or incompetent the announcer was? If so, why?

reply

Maybe they figured that since it was in a part of Africa that was south of Las Vegas, they could get away with it!

reply

My grandma would've had a freakout if she heard this line. She was a stickler for good geography.

reply

It wasn't an error. When it was born the whole town of Nairobi was so embarrassed that they all packed up and moved to Kenya.

reply

& that's not even mentioning how racist that scene is. Amazing what tv & movies got away with back in the day.

reply

It's only "racist" to someone suffering from a PC-induced psychosis. I mean, by the same logic we should conclude that Lon Chaney turning into a werewolf is also "racist", against them white folk.

reply

Same logic? Lon Chaney + werewolf = racist?
No. Not even close.
See, in case you've been living in a bubble since, well, your entire life, you *might've* read or heard of racists who compare black people to apes & monkeys. Happened as recently as a few months back with that woman who said it about Michelle Obama. The history of that comparison is long, disgusting and has played out in American news stories for decades & you don't need to be "suffering from a PC-induced psychosis" to see it. Its documented well enough for even the most ignorant to find...that is, unless you're suffering from an ignorance-induced purposeful blindness.

Lemme guess- you voted Trump?

reply

I didn't know PC causes paranoia and dementia this severe. I mean, what kind of a fool would conclude that a circus freakshow, presenting a black woman who is specifically described as a bizarre aberration, indeed a freak of nature and therefore most certainly not your average black person, is automatically racist because "racists compare black people to apes"? Get a grip for f-ck's sake and grow a thicker skin - or, rather, any skin at all.

reply

Now I've got dementia *and* severe paranoia. Another armchair psychiatrist in our midst... "political correctness!" That's typically the rally cry for those who're upset that they can't get away with being openly racist/ misogynistic / general aholes anymore. I'm gonna go out on a limb & guess that you're a white male. Too arrogant to see beyond your own privilege. Thankfully, not all sound like yourself.

Why do I keep getting reeled in to internet fights that never change minds? <Ignore>....

reply

Yeah, really takes the credibility out of the whole 'turning woman into gorilla' thing. Seriously, it's a cheap sideshow attraction for the rubes, don't expect them to sweat geographical accuracy.

reply

Imagine the surprise in Kenya and South Africa when they heard about this.

Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night.
