I found it truly uncut on DVD with excellent pic and sound

As I answered for another person asking, the version at santaflix dot com is really excellent. sharp pic and audio. And fully restored from what I can see. The ROC sequence and the charred bone are both there. Best I've ever found and I have five or six earlier versions now. This one actually is complete and the dang image is great. Sigh.

even tho i have the 2-disc uk edition(xrated uk version) and the euro cult bootleg (uncut) would getting this dvd be worth it if i have those releases. i love the film and the price is not bad but i guess basically my question is is this another bootleg type like the euro cult dvd and is the film in the right aspect ratio?

Garbage DVD. This is way worse than the Angel Digital DVD from 2005. It is NOT in full widescreen. It looks like they ripped it from the Mavericks VHS, which was only partially widescreen. The PAL to NTSC transfer has caused the worst ghosting effect I've ever seen. It looks like entire frames are being skipped, sometimes making it look like the characters are moving in slow motion. And the cut scenes are inserted even more badly than the Angel Digital DVD. So in other words, hey peaceriver, go screw yourself you fraud. The DVD is so bad I'm thinking of reporting you.

The BFI version is magnificent and un=cut. I had to purchase a pal recorder. found one used. good price and worth it. Still one of the greatest films in history.

reply

The BFI version isn't uncut, sadly. It's the original theatrical version, but the original theatrical version removed the Rape of Christ bit as well as the part where Sister Jeanne masturbates with one of Grandier's bones.

This footage was found by Mark Kermode and later included in the Hell On Earth documentary, which appears on the DVD. But insanely enough, the footage itself was cut from the version of the documentary on the DVD. The documentary uploaded onto YouTube has it intact, though.

These bastards!

I don't care for the rape of christ scene. It is gratuitous, badly shot . Scenes we have seen before. That cheap tacky zooming in and out on Mignon masterbating from the rafters watching the naked nuns below is ridiculous. He is clearly homosexual.
This version is the perfect one.And a stunning transfer.

reply

You may not care for it, but it's incredibly important to the film. And there was a lot more cut out of The Devils than just those two scenes due to a back-and-forth with the BBFC, trimming here and there to please them. But we will probably never see the full director's cut, it's believed to be lost forever.

For your information , I have worked and been one of Ken Russell's friends since 1972. The american version did indeed have little things trimmed. The UK version had the total Rape of Christ scene cut. Years later Ken admitted that the Rape scene was redundant and not needed. Yes he fought and fought in the beginning but later came to his senses. The film does not suffer from it.
I've seen it. It is ridiculous to have Father Mignon, clearly a homosexual, masterbating in the rafters looking down on a bunch of naked nuns. Makes no sense.
Also sister Jean's using Grandiers bone as a dildo is in this BFI version.

reply

I'm referring to the X-rated British version, not the American one which was even more cut. The film does suffer from its absence, the inter-cutting with Grandier was the whole point. I don't recall the bone dildo being in the BFI.

It's the ONLY version Warner bros allowed the BFI to release & the commentary is edited from the 2004 DC cut removing references to the DC material not in the BFI release & all the DC cut stuff is removed from doc as Warner wouldn't allow it.

reply

It does include the charred bone scene.

My santaflix version does not run smoothly -- jerky picture -- on my DVD player and Blu-ray player. Otherwise, excellent.
