Which is the best video-quality DVD version currently (NTSC)?

There seem to be several versions of DVD releases for The Devils. Which looks the best of the NTSC-format versions?

reply

i think all the ntsc releases are all dvd-r bootlegged releases.

there is a region 2 dvd with really good quality from bfi but it is the cut version although it is in the right aspect ratio.

ive seen a few of the bootlegs and i think the best one ive seen is this one.

this is a dvd-r but im pretty sure its fully uncut, its just not in the right aspect ratio other than the r*** of christ scene.

bascially none of the ntsc dvds are going to look good though.

That version that you linked to on eBay seems to be the same as the Euro Cult one listed on Amazon in the US. There are multiple reviews from Amazon customers that describe the video quality as being extremely poor. : (

yes all the us dvds are bootlegs and are not going to look good. thats the best one ive come across.

i just watched the euro cult uncut dvd and the quality isnt great but i was watching on my 60 inch plasma and its totally 100% watchable. smaller TVs will look even better. its definitely not GOOD quality but its watchable and you get used to the quality after 10 minutes.

Even though this is an old thread, I wanted to add my 2 cents.

I ordered two versions from eBay. Both were under $10, and if your choice is between these two, the one you'll want to get has a white cover as shown here:

Even though Vanessa Redgrave's and Ken Russell's names are misspelled (which would ordinarily indicate a low-grade product), it is vastly superior to the Korean version with the blue cover:

Neither version has the Rape of Christ scene. The former is 107 minutes long, which would probably indicate that some additional footage was removed (or that the film is speeded up), but the latter is 103 minutes and you can definitely tell where bits and pieces were cut out of it. The former is formatted for widescreen TVs, the latter is not. The former is a reasonably good print and looks fine even on a 60-inch TV, while the quality of the latter is quite poor. And the latter has a dialog track that is out of sync with the visuals, making it quite unwatchable.

I came across a version available from the Vermont Movie Store:

It arrived today in the mail --- it's advertised as uncut but displays a 111 minute run time on my Playstation. Picture quality seems pretty good. I've only ever seen the version previously available on iTunes and this one seems to be about the same grade, which is quite passable (in my opinion).

I watched it and yes the scenes are there.

The quality seems to be same level as the version that had been available on iTunes a while ago, which to me personally is quite passable. Overall picture is soft with not a lot of detail in some scenes but in my opinion is pretty good I'm happy to have it for my film collection. I'm not sure the source material but the scan for this DVD results in some sporadic frames that seem to move slightly different speed but I'm fine with it.
