A Goof

Walmington-on-Sea is supposed to be in Kent, which is why the platoon wear the Kentish badge of the white horse on their caps. When Mainwaring points at the map to indicate the town's location, he clearly indicates somewhere in Sussex, in the Brighton-Eastbourne area.

I must admit I'd kind of half thought it was around Dover, and half thought it was just supposed to be an old fashioned generic seaside town. Having said that, I read it was filmed somewhere in Whiltshire and the flora and fauna of the outside shots certainly remind me of there.

I didn't know about the caps.

Gordon P. Clarkson

Actualy,it was Filmed in Norfolk.

You are correct - they are showing locaations and general whimsy about it in the Comedy Map of Great Britain this weekend.

reply

Actually it was the TV show which was filmed in Norfolk.

Yes the Film was done in Chalfont St Giles.

I personally think that it is the Kentish badges that are the goof. In the TV version Walmington-on-Sea was always supposed to be in Sussex, and was believed to have represented Eastbourne.

I don't think there is any doubt that Walmington-on-Sea is supposed to be in Kent.

In an early scene in the film the characters gather at the local police station which has 'Kent Constabulary' signs all over it.

Also, in the radio series version of the episode 'Keep Young and Beautiful' Mainwaring gives the full address of the bank (whilst on the phone to the wig maker)...

Swallows Bank
High Street
Walmington-on-Sea
Kent

I can't see that the tv series would be set in a different county.

reply

Not sure if it helps with an actual location, but in the Series 9 episode, "Wake-Up Walmington", the pub they go to when dressed as Fifth Columnists is stated to be 20 miles away from Dover, and the pub itself is 5 miles from Walmington, which is in the opposite direction (since Captain Square arrived from the opposite direction to where the man points to Dover). So Walmington-On-Sea is 25 miles away from Dover.

In “Dad's Army: The Defence of a Front Line English Village” (BBC Books 1989), it is stated that Walmington-on-Sea is in Sussex, near Eastbourne. However, Mainwaring's cap badge definitely depicts a rearing horse: the badge of The Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment (after many regimental amalgamations, The Royal West Kents are now a part of The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment).

There's clearly some inconsistency at the Beeb as to where the fictional Walmington is located!
