Mute baby

The girl born just after the tree is struck by lighning is supposed to be mute, but wouldn't a baby make some kind of noise? Since the tribes don't seem to have any kind of speech apart from grunts, what difference does it make?

(As usual, there aren't enough children in the tribe to allow for replacement at a time of high infant mortality.)
