Funniest visual moment?

My favorite was the end of the opening credits-the expostition of the camera following the dog towards the town-then he hikes his leg to pee on the sign post! LOL

There was plenty in the way of sight gags, but right now, I'm reminded of the excellent acting moments between Dick Van Dyke and Pippa Scott during the compensation montage, when Reverend and wife cover their thirst for cigarettes with "afternoon delight".

My 2 favorite visual moments happen back to back in the church, right after the media descends on Eagle Rock. During a hymn, the camera pans first over the choir and then the congregation. The facial expressions of these "instant celebrities" are hilarious.

the funniest visual moment is when "Walter Chronic" appears at the operating room with a "halo" over his head. That was just... brilliant.

"It's David Chetley"

. . . . . . "It's David Chetley"

(Everyone in unison) "It's David Chetley!"

When the Bishop gives Van Dyke's character the Time Magazine with picture on the cover, the back is an ad by Valiant, the tobacco company sponsoring the contest. Hypocrisy all around. Big tobacco takes its lumps, but big media doesn't come out smelling like roses either.

Some people are afraid of the unknown. I don't know why, and it scares me.

I think my favorite visual moment is when the reverend and Mr. Wappler are waiting for the TV interview about the big prize offer. I like it not only because it's funny - with Mrs. Wappler sneezing and hacking away in the background, and the awful production values in the bug spray ad - but also because it's such an un-Hollywood moment. When was the last time you saw a movie where people actually had to wait through the commercials to hear a crucial plot-point piece of news, instead of turning on or walking past the TV at exactly the right time?

A lot of it was too hilarious, but I think the bits I always enjoyed the most was Pippa Scott, not being allowed to say a word, blowing smoke when Van Dyke is saying his wife used to smoke, making the bed then watching Van Dyke come home nad she throws the covers back off, "there's a demon in you, Natalie. Why are you against me? Don't slouch, Natalie."

It was the truest swan song for the put-upon dominated wife to me.

A shocked Dr. Proctor stabs Clayton with a scalpel.
Walter Chronic has a halo.

The ever present silent council member bedecked in overalls.

I saw this as a little kid and loved it. Is it still as funny or is it dated?

reply

It’s much funnier if you’re an adult. It’s very 1970s but that’s part of the fun.

I watched it last night. Wow, it's way over the top. It was funny and I enjoyed it. The best moment to me was toward the end when Natalie was jumping up and down for joy upon seeing the President and getting the money. It was the only time in the movie when Clayton wasn't around telling her not to slouch and she was really enjoying herself!
