better than the remake.

Kate Beckingsale can't act her way out of apaper bag. I haven't seen any film where she added a thing. See the BBC original not the remake.

I agree, this is the better version: it has so much more of the book in it, including the hilarious over-the-top D H Lawrence-y narration.

Yes! I loved Rosalie Crutchley as Judith (more witch-y than Eileen Atkins), and as one of my friends remarked, comparing Peter Egan and Rufus Sewell as Seth, "Rufus was wearing far too many clothes"! ;-D

I saw the Beckinsale version first, and in many ways I prefer it. But after reading the book and then seeing this version, I have to agree that this one is much truer to the original.

I think I prefer Seth, his mother, and the costumes/production design in the 90's one (it looks like it had a much bigger budget!) and everything else in the 60's one.

I saw the BBC original in 1968, it was so brilliant I still remember it after 40 years. The remake was a big disappointment. I would love to see the '68 version again. Got no response from BBC when I emailed them about a DVD or a repeat.

The 1968 version *IS* available transferred to DVD but not officially, nor from the BBC; you have to do a deep search for it.... or ask around....

I saw this nearly 40 years ago and have been talking about it all these years. It would be lovely to have a DVD or DVD set of these (as I remember) hilarious episodes. Can't someone pull some strings at the BBC and have them issue one?

reply

The only way you can get round it is to do the torrent thing. It is available. I hate recommending it but what else can you do when you can't get it any other way?

Other suggestion would be ioffer.com - someone may have recorded it from TV but if it's a DVD, it won't look bad.

Having posted a review of this version here on IMDB I completely agree with samanthaseaotter. If TV and film companies delete items from their catalogues and make then unavailable by legitimate means then surely it is justifiable to share them by using torrents. I do not condone cheating companies out of their royalties but they bring it upon themselves if they try to control what we can and cannot buy.

I'm so excited, I just scored the VHS tape of Pt II, "The Woodshed". I love the remake, & since everybody here raves about the original, I'm really looking forward to seeing it. Alastair Sim as Cousin Amos sounds wonderful, I've loved him since "A Christmas Carol" and "St Trinians".
Plus, maybe I can find out what that "Something nasty in the woodshed" was(though I didn't find out when I read the book).

"Stalker?"
"Yup, bigtime"
