whats with all the wigs?

Why are almost all the women in the movie wearing wigs? I have read a bunch of article about the movie and that is one part that is never answered. What say you?

reply

It's never explained but it could either be a fashion trend with the older ladies or an extreme example of them getting a blue rinse.

reply

All the women in the movie wear wigs because Kubrick was a Jew - as am I - and orthodox Jewish married women are bound by the rules of our religion to shave their heads and wear wigs from the day of their marriage until death. Shalom!

reply

But the girl in the lavender wig during the humiliation on stage scene, where she's naked, she's super young. I doubt she's married.

reply

I don't know if your being sarcastic or serious but if serious, then what a stupid religion that is.

reply

Why....

Probably because Kubrick was equating them with the mannequins at the Korova Milk Bar. Alex and society as a whole didn't view women as human beings but as dolls.

I think that it's symbolic of how the women have abnormally bright and colorful views of the world. Only the men complain about being trapped in a dystopia. The cat lady is perhaps not as naive as Mrs. Alexander or the other females clad in wigs, but has a lot of faith in the police when clearly the legal system can no longer be trusted. The woman who is hired by Frank does not seem to care about the country one way or the other and will probably do whatever she is told to as long as she gets paid, and Mrs. Alexander of course is one of Alex's most significant victims. Those could explain why the last two mentioned characters do not wear wigs.

This was made in the early 70s. It was the beginning of the Glam Rock phase. Kubrick probably thought it would be the height of fashion in the future for women of that generation to retain that particular look.

The decor, clothes and general style of the movie is horribly dated and kitsch now, but would have seemed bang on trend back in '71.
