Wrong Credit! the Billy Boy gang rape victim is NOT Shirley Jaffe!

Not really sure how this false information got started, but once it was printed somewhere every site seems to quote it as fact now.

I was always curious about some of the actors and actresses (well, mostly the actresses!) who appeared in ACO and what else they may have done (in the UK obviously), and most of them have scant credits and even those are nearly impossible to find copies of.

Anyway, the actress credited as the victim of the early rape on the derelict stage at the beginning of the film (the "Thieving Magpie" sequence) has always been mentioned as being Shirley Jaffe. Checking her credits, I found out that she appeared in a Hammer Dracula film, "Taste The Blood of Dracula" from 1969. I just happened to have that film on dvd, too, so I dug out my copy and took another look at it to spot her in the film. Well, she plays a maid in that film, and appears in a scene where you can get a close look at her face....

And she is not the girl in the rape sequence from ACO.

Shirley Jaffe DOES appear in ACO, just not in the infamous scene she's always been credited for. She plays a Nurse in the film. After doing a little more digging, I found a website that actually has close-ups of her in both films that proves she has been given the wrong credit many times in ACO. Check it out:

Now this raises another question, the mystery of who actually IS the actress in that early rape sequence?

very interesting, until reading your observation, I spent years assuming that it was Shirley playing the Billyboy Gang victim.

Shirley is only 5 foot 2 inches tall, and the girl in the attempted rape scene looks taller---although her buxom build is quite similar---perhaps this is where the confusion arises from?

Connected to this, I think I recognized one of the Billyboy Gang elsewhere: he is seen in a 1972 Benny Hill Show filmed sketch set in a gymnasium, doing some of the stunts...it's the guy with the thin moustache, alas his name is not on the Benny Hill credits either.

I always assumed the Billyboy Gang were really professional stuntmen, going by their undoubted skill in the fight scenes, and they were hired to also do the stripping scene because it was cheaper to get them to appear in those shots too.

I think you're correct about Billy Boy's gang members not being actual actors... From what I've read about Kubrick's penny-pinching when it came to production costs, I wouldn't be surprised if he used stuntmen instead of actors if it resulted in their pay costing less.

Well spotted! It's good when people use their powers of observation to correct mistakes on IMDB.

Unfortunately the IMDB, like the Internet in general, is full of mistakes. Why is this? For a blend of two reasons. First, far too many people believe everything on the Internet is correct and so they repeat what they've picked up, quite convinced what they're saying/writing is true. The second reason is ego. A lot of people want to contribute and are eager to be the first to supply a piece of information. So they abandon caution, don't bother to check if what they adding is correct, and just slap down some assertion and then feel pleased with themselves.

That mistake you spotted is not the only one. The IMDB cast list says Cheryl Grunwald plays the rape victim in the corrective film. Wrong! When A Clockwork Orange was on general release in the U. K, ABC Film Review and Cinema X both said Cheryl Grunwald played the girl molested by Billy Boy and his gang. I'm not convinced that is correct either. I think Cheryl Grunwald is one of the two girls - the brunette - Alex picks up and takes back to his flat. The blonde is played by Gillian Hills. I have no idea who does the play the rape victim. I certainly don't recognise the face. How did I arrive at my opinion about whom Cheryl Grunwald is playing? The same way you researched Shirley Jaffe. I have photos of Cheryl Grunwald - I seem to be the only person in the world who does - and she is easily recognisable.

If you want a laugh, check the IMDB for actresses called Barbara Scott. IMDB thinks there are two, one of them appearing in A Clockwork Orange, and does not realise they are the same person! I have no idea what Barbara Scott looks like or what part she played. Maybe she played the rape victim?

I'm bumping this because I've submitted the correction twice to IMDb but they keep ignoring me. Maybe someone else will have better luck.

I've looked at the picture it has to be Cheryl Grunwald.

Cheryl Grunwald was the rape victim with the pink wig in one of the films Alex is forced to watch during Ludovico.

That certainly is a magnificent and majestic animal! Can we eat it?

No no look at her picture she's the first rape victim that's where IMDB is wrong..

They don't resemble each other at all.

If you can see past the fact that she's wearing a wig and makeup, and that she's upside-down in the photo, THIS is Cheryl Grunwald:
