so this film is a comedy

I had avoided this movie for a long time because I read the book about ten years ago and didn't like it very much. I don't remember it being comedic either. I think it's beat for beat the same as the movie. But, Kubrick adds little touches here and there that are very funny. This film was way better than I expected.

I once read that while working on the film they regarded it as a black comedy.
It wasn't until all the post release scandal and copycat crime that Kubrick had the film pulled.
It's interesting in that he had assumed higher intelligence from the audience than many possessed.
I once read that once an individual becomes enlightened the biggest mistake they make is assuming others are as well.

I'd argue that most of Kubrick's films are (dark) comedies. This one, Dr Strangelove and Full Metal Jacket are pretty much like live-action cartoons.

How is Full Metal Jacket a cartoon? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying I'm intrigued :)

I'd also like to hear that person's justification for terming Full Metal Jacket a comedy. While it has moments of black humor (nearly every Kubrick film does), its overall tone veers significantly more to tragedy than comedy. Full Metal Jacket strikes me, tonally at least, more akin to a Kubrick film like Barry Lyndon than Strangelove or ACO.

However (and this opinion gets me into a lot of arguments) I would concur that The Shining IS like a live-action cartoon, and in the same vein as ACO and Strangelove.

Definitely a black comedy . That's why the violence and rape was done with an element of humour . The score certainly helped .

reply

It certainly is a black comedy with violence.

It's that man again!!

The guard was hilarious too. “Shut you bleed’n hole!”

reply

God, the guard was gold!

"Are you able to see that white line painted on the floor directly behind you, 655321?" "Then your toes belong ...ON THE OTHER SIDE OF IT!!!"

Also, when he was interrogating Alex while he was inspecting his arsehole. "Do you wear any false teeth or false limbs?" LOL

To call it a comedy per se would be stupid, parts of it are absolutely disturbing. But Kubrick had a dark sense of humour, some scenes are really funny. I mean, the "FOOD...alright" scene is absolute hilarious.

I just rewatched it a couple of days ago. I remember liking it a lot more when I first saw it. This time around it just made me want to watch other Kubricks instead, so I put 2001 on straight after - and OMFG that thing is still perfect.

Yes, this movie is the definition of a black comedy. Everything is over emphasized, to where horrific events become fiendishly silly. Watching Alex delight in his cruelty, and the gaudy futuristic setting of the couples apartment, it's eye-popping and ends up being a little bit funny. (I also want to mention how great MMc was in this role, especially how agile his physical work was.)
