It was released last week in Brazil, from an independent label (Versátil) who claims that the film was transferred from a restored copy. The DVD is region free, i.e. playable on any NTSC capable player. It has no English subtitles though, which makes it difficult for foreign countries:

This film has a special meaning to Brazilians of my generation who saw it banished by censors during the military dictatorship that lasted 20 twenty years in this country.

Interestingly, the censors did not notice anything bad about it at first, and granted permission for exhibitors. A college colleague and I skipped classes to see it in the first day of exhibition, fearing that it would be eventually banned, and it so happened that the censors issued an order to remove the copy from the theater the next day.

God knows what happened next, because the copy was not immediately taken from the exhibitor (an art house, actually), so as soon as students found out about the banning, lines were formed until 4 o'clock in the morning, within the next three days or so.

The dictatorship censors were strange people. La classe operaria va in paradiso is not that subversive, as to the point of being prohibited. Much more subversive works went free on those days, whereas other had ridiculous cuttings. After the dictatorship ended, circa 1982, so did the censors, ending a chapter in local life that most of us would wish that it would never have happened.

Hmm I really wish there was a site that streamed it, or just some fan who could share it online. I really want to see this, but frankly I don't know how wise it would be to pay a lot of DVD that I know won't play in my home entertainment center (and probably not computer either), for which there are no English language subtitles....

The Region 2 DVD is available here: http://tinyurl.com/6okdl2s

I finally got it a few days ago and it's well worth the price. The video quality is excellent and English subtitles are included for both the film and the extras.

if you have a copy without subtitles....
in the www you can find subtitles in different languages for the most films,
so you can add them by yourself.

you need just the right player
or you rip the movie and add them.

its a little bit work, but it is way ;-)
