Origin of title?

I would like to know if the title of the film is taken from another work, or has significance apart from this work, such as religious reference... thanks

It's just a quote from one of the people they interviewed in the beginning, the pharmacist at about 3 minutes in. I don't recall exactly but I believe they asked what the man remembered from 1939 and he said he felt a great deal of sorrow and pity.

The people you idolize wouldn't like you.

The answer is in the movie itself. The chemist, Marcel Verdier, says to Ophuls : "what I most remember about this period is the sorrow and the pity."
