Characters reflecting real life?

I thought it was interesting that the character "Sid" is a compulsive gambler, and the character "Charles" is a drunk. Do you think that the screenwriter was having a go at the actors Sid and Charles, who had those problems in real life?

You could be right. I bet Sid wish that he had a budgie who predicted race winners.
