Ellen Burstyn offered role of Bobbie

Burstyn appeared 7 years later in a copycat movie of Carnal Knowledge, playing opposite Allan Alda: -
Same Time,Next Year

reply

Now that would have been something to see. Burstyn was hot as hell back then.

There, daddy, do I get a gold star?

reply

How did you like Olivia Newton-John playing the female lead opposite John Trevolta in Grease?

reply

I think Olivia was cool (and hot). Still do.

I agree it's not copycat. Perhaps the fact that Same Time Next Year is a continuing story of adultery, highlighted for me the movie's dark undercurrent of social satire. Alda knows how bring this out, as when he has solved his quest by wearing beads and has a job playing piano in bars but looks totally depressed.

I only saw Same Time Next Year when it first came out in the theatres. I went to it in a crowded car in my first time with a United Church of Canada youth social group. After the movie we were invited by a well-off couple in a suburb for a snack. One of the young women was explaining the basic plot of the movie to our hostess who then said that both the male and female stars were IN REAL LIFE "happily married." Not just legally married, you see, but HAPPILY married. I didn't know whether to ask the hostess if she herself was happily married, or to throw up my date squares on her thick shag rug. I never tried to join any more youth groups.

I can't see Ellen Burstyn as Bobbie.

And Same time Next Year is a classic but carnal knowledge is JUST SILLY.

reply

I agree completely, artistatrest.

I just now had forgotten all carnal knowledge and can't remember the same time last year - having today for the first time watched the movie Inception.

reply

I agree. Ann-Margret made this film. Burstyn would have just been another actress.

reply

Copycat movie? Well, STNY and CK both have human actors in them and deal with relationships. Any other commonality is reaching.

Burstyn is a terrific actress, but completely inappropriate (physically) to play Bobbie. Cindy's role, maybe, but not Bobbie.

reply

I agree. Bobbie needed to be hot. Ann-Margret is. Ellen Bursytn isn't. Like you, I could see her as Cindy.
