I agree with you Tomislav. It is a "hard" realistic movie about living at begining of last century in poor village in north-west Croatia. It show us poverty, surviving , relations among spouses with usual male brute dominationat that time, relations among mother in low and bride, relations among poor people in village and "almost" rich people, all their prejudices...
I do believe, even it is hard to believe for me, that this story was a "real" reality at that time at that place... or even all over the rural Croatia back then.
Some parts off this movie made me shuddered.
Some parts off this movie made me crying each time.
Breza is a tree : Birch tree.
Whenever Birch tree is mentioned in some conversation I rember Janica Labudan and her suffering.

I just watched it for the first time, and thought it moving, and very beautifully shot, especially in the lighting of the outdoor scenes.

My only problem is that the "learning" that Marko experiences at the end was totally unearned, both in character development, and dramatic arch.
