Screening of 'The Boyfriend', 16/05/10, Portsmouth, UK

On Sunday 16th May, we are hosting a totally unique screening of Ken Russell's 'The Boyfriend' here at the New Theatre Royal, which is where it was filmed in 1972. This special one-off event, hosted by Ken and his wife Lisi, is to help the theatre raise £4 million to rebuild the theatre's back-lot, destroyed by fire later that year, and to celebrate Ken's work and his long and illustrious career in film. 'The Boyfriend' will be preceded by a live 'sofa chat' with Ken, Twiggy and other cast members, talking about the film and their experiences when filming. Local tap stars will also be recreating the famous Tommy Tune tap scene.

This is truly a fans' event, and we hope you will join us on the day!

Full details and how you can purchase your tickets can be found at http://www.newtheatreroyal.com/newseason/pages/whatson/may/the-boy-friend-with-ken-russell/

Amazing!

We've now also had Sir Peter Maxwell Jones (composer and friend of Ken's) and Murray Melvin (Alphonse in the film) confirm, and we're hoping that Melvyn Bragg will be available to lead the 'sofa chat'.

Spread the word, see you there!

Fantastic, thanks for the info!

Just as an aside, since you seem like such a big fan, do you know of anywhere I could get good Boy Friend merchandise or memorabilia? We'd like to present Ken with something signed by the cast, but there's nothing much on eBay etc.

Cheers

As it happens I do have sort of a "holy grail" for "Boyfriend" fans, a *laser* disc package in good condition with some great artwork (the cover is the one used the event facebook page) and it opens up into a nice 12 x 24 gatefold. The audio and video are corrupting on the discs so it's not of much value to a collector or someone who wants to watch the movie at this point, but would make a nice presentation. It would be a pleasure to know it's in Ken's hands but is there any chance of getting a small perk if I give it up, say a reserved seat or maybe a photo opportunity, or something? :)

Let me know what you think...

Scott

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your kind offer, but we actually, the same day, managed to snag something off eBay!

I'm sure we can sort a photo opp anyway - where are you travelling from?

reply

Well, congrats then! I'm coming from Hollywood for a much-needed vacation! I'm so happy this coincided with it and I'm really looking forward to it!

Hi Scott,

Apologies if you're already in the UK and don't get this!

When you booked you ticket I presume that you were informed that it started at 2:15pm?

I've just had a thought - in order to get the best photo opportunity for you on the day, you should come to a private reception that we are having in the theatre for Ken from 1:15pm (e.g. an hour before the start of the show).

I'm going to add you to the guestlist for the private reception just in case you do get this message and manage to come earlier on the day!

Any problems/questions, just send me a message here.

Cheers,

Lyndsay, New Theatre Royal

Hello Lindsay-- thank you, I got the message and I'm thrilled! I'll definitely be there, thanks for the invitation and I can't wait!

Sincerely,

Scott
