I actually saw the 2017 remake long before the older one, but even without this or the book to compare it to, the Coppola movie is BORING, just an exercise in antebellum aesthetics without compelling characters. In general, I find Coppola a hit or miss director. I love MARIE ANTOINETTE and LOST IN TRANSLATION, but THE BLING RING and THE BEGUILED are cures for insomnia.
The 2017 runs with the melodramatic pulpiness of the story. You can argue it's "camp" but it's also tense and memorable. There was just more passion to it.
