The Soldiers of the Old Home Guard and Britcom "Dad's Army"

The Home Guard soldiers were largely forgotten until a comedy series, Dad's Army, appeared on British television in 1968. It focused on older volunteers although various age groups served.

This image of older volunteers was a direct and huge influence on the 1971 Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks, which featured a creaking group of aging rustics armed with pitchforks and other ancient implements. The Home Guard had its own theme song composed by Richard and Robert B. Sherman, which, following the title music, opened and closed the film, and "The Soldiers of the Old Home Guard" took credit for repelling the Nazi invasion actually accomplished by Eglantine Price and her companions. http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Home_Guard

Could never understand why the Dad's Army cast never sang it.

reply

Because it was a copyrighted Disney song but it would have been cool if they had their own theme song.

Could have worked something out surely?
