I noticed in his apartment, during the scene where the girl comes in to have him sign the petition, there is a gold M hanging on the wall. It looks just like the one on the Mary Tyler Moore show in her apartment, so do you think he was making some subtle reference to that? Or am I just making things up?

The first season of the Mary Tyler Moore Show was in 1970, and this movie was made in 1971, which is why I thought it was plausible.
