It's Aged Terribly

Okay, so I wasn't alive in 1971, but I imagine it was a lot funnier back then. I still think it's good for laughs but some of the gags - the Howard Cosell part in particular - just seem dead on arrival to a 2015 audience.

Then your friends must be familiar with ABC sports commentators from the 1970s. I'd guess most people aren't.

Okay, maybe not terribly, but also I'm guessing I'm a bit younger than you. Me and my friends didn't grow up in the 80s.

No idea who those people (Cosell and that other guy) are or why is it important to know them. Bananas though is hilarious regardless.

He was a popular sportscaster in the 70s (as wikipedia tells me). I guess it'd be the same as a 2015 movie showing Bob Costas in the same role.

Howard Cosell used to give young Donald Trump ego lessons. Howard really believed he was cast in this movie because of his magnificent talent. He apparently had no idea his whole persona was being satirized.

When someone committed a crime against the State, they were forced to watch him.

I dunno; I'm older, and I remember and know Howard, and I think his scenes are brilliant. I'm not sure why they would fall flat to someone who doesn't know the guy; I think they stand perfectly well on their own. I mean, come on, a play-by-play of the sex like it's a boxing match? That's brilliant, whether you know who he is or not.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

Yeah I agree. Looking back I was exaggerating when I posted that this film has aged terribly. I still enjoy this film and it makes me laugh.

reply

It has aged terribly indeed. It's somewhat interesting as a product of its time but this script would have ended up in bins if released today.
