Disappointing
Making my way through Indian classic films I've been recording on my satellite "Bollywood" channel, I got to this highly recommended film, but was quite disappointed.
First of all, the characters were one-dimensional, with no complexity at all. Anand was more annoying than life-affirming, and his optimism seemed strained most of the time. I don't expect neo-realism type of reality, but he didn't seem ill at all, even when he was receiving chemotherapy. And the doctor never seemed to be working.
I also expected more use of the city as background. The film was dedicated, so we see at the beginning, to "the city of Bombay", and Anand came there to see, and die in, the great city. But we see little of it, and no interaction with the characters.
