What Does the Rating 'GP' Stand For?

I noticed that many early 70's films got this rating. Perhaps a precursor to PG-13?

General Audiences, Parental Guidance Suggested.

Was changed because people thought it meant General Public.

I thought it meant the film could only be viewed if there was a member of the medical profession in the cinema!

The rating seems to have been relaxed to GP now. The 2004 DVD release was rated 15. And when the movie was originally released, people had to be 18 to see it.
