Favorite Characters

Who are your Favorite Characters?

My Favirite Characters are Mrs Bridges and Rose with Hudson in Third.

My Least Favorites are Alfred and Miss Roberts. And Emily as well, although it was sad how her character was written off.

reply

My favorite characters are James Bellamy, Richard Bellamy, Ruby and Hazel.

My least favorite character is Lawrence Kirbridge - he was just intolerable.

reply

I give credit to Hudson & Mrs. Bridges because they really are the iconic characters of UD.

The character I identify the most with is James.

I like Richard, I think he is an admirable man.

The show wouldn't have been the same without Ruby.

reply

Hazel, Richard, Rose, Hudson, Mrs. Bridges, Ruby, James,. . ., there are too many great characters to single one out.

reply

My favorite character was James. Very flawed and very complex.

Of the main cast these were the characters I liked unreservedly:

Hudson
Richard
Hazel
Sarah
Daisy

And these were the characters I disliked (at times) the most:

James
Rose
Elizabeth
Georgina
Edward

Mrs Bridges and Hudson from downstairs, Richard, Prudence and Sir Geoffrey from upstairs. So many legendary characters but they must be my top five.

It's the times, what can we do...

How did you manage to narrow it down? I read through everyone else's responses and I find I have too many favorites-- I can't narrow it down. Too many least favorites, too!

reply

lol, I've just finished s4, so my likes and dislikes are fresh in my mind.

Richard & Rose

The least watchable for me was Frederick. I wasn't interested in his competition with Edward or his foray into acting. I found him dull.

I thought that Georgina and James were the most fascinating characters in terms of development, maturing during the War as they did. I loved Hudson but they made a mistake with the Lily storyline IMO.

FAVOURITE

Rose : The heart of the show for me, and, in some ways, the easiest character to identify with. She most certainly was the one with the most modern type of sensitivity. Always been a fan of Jean.

Hudson : Just the definitive portrayal of the Edwardian butler. No actor in film or TV history could ever portray this kind of character as memorably and effortlessy as Gordon, with the possible exception of Anthony Hopkins in "The Remains of the Day".

Hazel: I think Seasons 3-4 are the peak of the show (as many other people do) and she's certainly one of the main reasons. I liked how her humbler origins made her a more human character than Lady Marjorie and a sort of link between the upstairs and downstairs world. Her conversation with Richard about the downstairs family is one of my favourite moments in the whole show. As her replacement, Virginia came in too late and didn't have enough spotlight episodes.

LEAST FAVOURITE

Frederick: The only character I really couldn't care about. In the role, Gareth Hunt had all the facial expressiveness of a totem pole and less screen presence than the cameraman (although he was even worse a couple years later in the horrendous "New Avengers"). He was arguably the only character who had basically nothing to do in any of his episodes (wonder if that was due to the actor's limits), and, as a result, his only spotlight episode, "Alberto", feels completely filler.

Georgina: Never really seemed to grow up, although I understand that it might have been the point of her character. Hard to feel anything for her in 'Joke Over' (I even wonder if, in the end, when she finally looked a bit upset, it wasn't just a trick to get closer to Robert). Despite all her flaws, Lizzie seemed a more complex character, even if only for her contradictory nature.

Daisy: As I said, Frederick is the only character I really disliked. In Daisy's case, I suppose it's just a vibe. Something about her (or Jacqueline Tong) always prevented me from being 100% involved with her dramas. Since the character was rather stong-willed, maybe she needed a more charismatic performer.

If I were fictional, British and lived a century ago I would like to 1) drink a pint with Hudson, 2) be wed to Hazel, 3) play polo with Lieutenant James, 4) romp with Elizabeth and 5) clerk for Richard.

On the other hand I would 1) pity poor Ruby, 2) snub Miss Georgina, 3) avoid Mrs. Roberts, 4) unfriend pre-Great War Edward and 5) banish Sarah!

Mostly though I think I would just enjoy Mrs. Bridges' cooking......
