Inconsistant townspeople

The writers really must have wanted to do a High Noon-type episode with "Where did Everybody Go?" In the previous episodes the townspeople couldn't wait to get into a fight, whether with each other or even taking on Mexican Revolutionaries, but here they're held in a grip of fear by three young rowdies. Even Ketcham just stood by and watched as they messed up his car.
