Miniseries covering English civil war/wars of religon

I know I'm not crazy. It was a miniseries very much in the tradition of "Elizabeth R" and "I Claudius" about a family struggling through the Cavalier/Roundhead era. It was facinating, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it. It ran (in America)during the early/mid eighties and is not listed among Masterpiece Theatre titles, though I seem to recall Alistair Cooke introducing each episode. Anybody?
