Anyone know which stories will be told in 2013?

Anyone know what will be on Masterpiece in 2013 after Downton Abbey? Don't they air earlier in England? So someone in England might know more than I do...

reply

I'd like to know as well. Personally I'm not a fan of Downton Abbey (shame on me, I know) so I'd like to see what adaptations they'll be airing next.

It's kind of frustrating that PBS is pouring all their promotion efforts into s3 of Downton Abbey. I'm anxious to know what else is on the menu for this winter/spring season.

The only program I know of for certain is Mr. Selfridge, which has not been seen in UK yet (begins in a few days on ITV).

PBS Masterpiece was also involved in co-producing The Paradise which has already been seen in UK on BBC. But there's no word on when this will air. Will they save it until autumn 2013, like they did with Call the Midwife? Or will they broadcast it this winter/spring, in close proximity to Selfridge (the two programs have strong similarities)?

Additionally, PBS Masterpiece co-produced The Lady Vanishes also with BBC, which is a 90-minute adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's 1938 thriller, and as such might appear on Masterpiece Mystery rather than Masterpiece Classic.

Another possible candidate is ITV's The Making of a Lady, but I think that's rather unlikely.

There's also a Call the Midwife Christmas Special that hasn't been screened yet in US, so we might get that in the spring (rather than waiting until autumn?).

They are airing the BBC drama 'Call the Midwife' the past few weeks...I guess until 'Lady Vanishes' premieres?

I don't think Call the Midwife is playing nationally. PBS broadcast it nationally last autumn. I think local affiliates have the option to re-broadcast it if they want to, as it fits into their local programming schedule. (Right now it's pledge drive time, so locals are choosing their own programming.)

My local is rerunning Downton Abbey series 3.

Wikipedia now has The Lady Vanishes and The Paradise listed in next year's (2014) schedule.

'Midwife' is awful...slow and draggy. I don't think I'll watch the entire series. I am looking forward to "Mr. Selfridge" (because I love Jeremy Priven) and look forward to it's premiere on March 31 (and it runs through mid-April). Let us hope it's as engrossing and entertaining as "DA".

I loved Call the Midwife. I thought the plots were wonderful, esp. after Miranda Hart arrived! The last couple of eps in s1 were the best, imo.

I've watched Selfridge already (I cheated). It's good, but not nearly as compelling as other works by Andrew Davies. When I watched the last ep, it didn't bother me that I wouldn't see it again until next year.

thanks for all the info! I'm just seeing this now. Also, I've heard they are working on two more Sherlock seasons (three episodes each). The next one supposedly will be early 2014. Can't wait!

So what will come on once SELFRIDGE (which is surprisingly very good) ends on May 20?

By now, I'm sure you've realized it's been Masterpiece Mystery all summer.

I believe they'll be showing us The Paradise this autumn, and perhaps a new series of Call the Midwife?

In January s4 of Downton Abbey will begin, and I suspect they will follow it with s2 of Mr. Selfridge.

Death Comes to Pemberley is supposed to run on Masterpiece in 2014, too.

Additionally, Masterpiece has also picked up Jack Davenport's new period drama (set in the 1960's), Breathless.

So lots of new programs coming soon to PBS Masterpiece.
