'Lidsville' Mentioned on 'The Daily Show'!

Last night's interview on "The Daily Show" was with author Steven Johnson, who theorizes that popular culture has led to an increase in intelligence. Jon mentioned "Lidsville," with which Johnson was unfamiliar, so Jon had to explain it to him. I was thrilled because my coworkers have heard me talk about the show for years and they've always acted like I'm making it up. Now that its name has been dropped on their fave trendy fake news show, I had to taunt them with how much cooler I am than they are since I'd seen it and talked about BEFORE it was on "The Daily Show" and Jon Stewart clearly has a soft spot for "Lidsville" too!

reply

What are you, retarded? Jon brought it up in a discussion about terrible shows. (i.e the best example of one)

reply

Yes, I know very well that he was using it as an example of terrible television -- I saw the interview. Reread the post and you will see that I never said I liked the show or thought it was good. What I said is that I have mentioned it over the years (as an example of terrible television, dear), but whenever I mentioned it, everyone acted like I was making it up. Now that someone cool has made a reference to it on a cool program, these same people who evinced no curiosity about the show when I told them about it are all falling over themselves to get info about it.

I can't imagine that anyone thought the show was good, but for those of us who saw it, it was certainly memorable and remarkable (for all the wrong reasons). I would think that anyone reading this message board would think "What a hoot!" instead of "Hooray, isn't it great that this fabulous show got namedropped by Jon Stewart!" But maybe I overestimate the intelligence and judgment of people who read these boards. (And even if I do, I would refrain from calling them retarded.)

You know, they say the time in young person's life in which is the most influenced by pop culture is after age 2 (because before that nothing registers) and before age 7 (because by that time you already start forming your own opinions about things). This would place me square in Sid and Marty Kroft territory. I never got into H.R. Pufnstuf because it always seemed a little too fairy-tale, but not in a cool twisted/creepy Brothers Grimm manner, but in a too-cutesy Walt Disney mode. Lidsville, on the other hat, (ha!) was a different matter entirely. The tale of a confused adolescent shocked into an incomprehensible world where anthropomorphic hats cavort, he is menaced by an evil, green-faced magician (played by Charles Nelson Reilly!) and trapped in a nightmare universe of psychedelic colors and talking inanimate objects he cannot understand. Now if that's not a description of a REALLY BAD ACID TRIP, I don't what is. No wonder my generation is such a mess.

How insecure are you that you need a reference to some inane childrens show you once saw, by someone on TV, to make you think you are cool?

reply

I dunno, man. I thought Lidsville was more of a "cult classic" than just a bad show.

"Pink walls? What is this, a Turkish whorehouse?"

I watched all of the Krofft shows growning up along with all the other kid shows like Mr Rogers, Seasame Street and Capt Kangaroo reruns.. funny as a teenager I never felt the urge to pick up a gun and blow away all the kids who teased me mercilessly day after day as a child, as do some of the teenagers and young adults do today. Say what you want about green witches, talking hats and Bert and Ernie.. I will take them over filthy rap music, flesh eating zombies and car thieving gang murdering video games anyday. If I had a child I would rather someone put a bullet in my head before he/she viewed or listened to the trash available today.

I am also not stupid enough to believe a two year old or younger can view a slasher flick and be unaffected if the site of a large hairy dog or a stranger can literally scare the crap out of them, fyi even my dog leaves a trail when someone on the tv screams.

Try to find the HR PuffNStuff parody from "Mr. Show", if you want a good laugh.
