What's happen to it?

I am a fan of Masterpiece theatre and of Cooper's novel but have never seen this series. According to many people, this is the best version of LOM and yet this is still not released onto video or dvd. Does anyone know who ownes the rights to this film and if it is possible if it will ever be released?

reply

The rights and copyrights to the series have expired, according to my contacts with the BBC. The series is currently housed in the archival section of the BBC, and can be viewed by appointment only if you are a film producer or student. Several years back, library copies existed of the series on VHS, of which I have a copy. The series is quite good.

Isn't there SOMETHING that PBS/Channel Thirteen or the BBC can do? What a shame to lose this absolute masterpiece of twentieth century television! Jayworld, do you have any contacts at PBS or the BBC? Can't they talk to each other? I would give anything to see this series again...and again...and to show it to my grandson. (When I was a girl, my parents had a summer home in the Adirondack Mountains near Fort William Henry. It is God's country and very dear to my heart. Only the BBC miniseries did justice to LOM...a true gem that should be preserved and shared with generations to come.)

Jayworld:
You are the only person I know who actually has a copy of this. Any chance of archiving this to dvd for others to borrow?
Thanks.

I would also be interested in any copy you may be able to provide. My whole family enjoyed this miniseries back in 1971, so much so that we traveled to upstate New York the following summer to visit Fort William Henry and Cooperstown. Please email me at [email protected]

I love the fact that this show inspires people to visit the Adirondacks.

It was filmed in Scotland.

I also have been looking for this series for years. It was the best make of the book ever seen. Why cant someone take advantage of the public appeal and outcry and sell this to us? I have told people about this series for years and i will keep trying to get it released to the public. It is a treasure.

Now available on commercial DVD (not a lame bootleg) through Koch.....

My family recently got this series. My Mom remembers seeing it on TV when she was in her teens. So far we've seen the first half and it's very accurate and the acting is quite good.

it is now available in the US for rent on NetFlix. Not too bad for an old series.
