His face neever manages to look entirely real somehow. The moustache and the hair particulary. It also looks like he wears a lot of make up.

Perhaps it had something to do with the actor's homosexuality.

The hair and mustache started out being real in Department S. The only reason they were styled like that was because he was initially appearing in a play in the evenings where he was playing a Russian aristocrat.

When the idea of Jason King came along the producer was concerned about the time taken to style Wyngarde's hair. With Department S's three lead actors scenes not involving Wyngarde could easily be shot while his hair was dressed but that wouldn't be possible with him starring alone. At that point, as a time saving measure, a wig was used.

As for makeup, he was suddenly catapulted into being a teen heartthrob when he was hardly a young man and make up was more obvious then than it is now.
