'Today on The Electric Company' question

Starting in Season 3, each episode would begin with a "Today on The Electric Company" bumper, with the key word replaced by a Theramin-like electronic tone. (Also, the "Tune in next time" bumper at the end used the same format.)

My question is: Was the sketch featured in the "Today" bumper _always_ a new one, never before featured on the show?

reply

Maybe not necessarily. The "Today" teaser for Season 3 episode #321 was for the "Hircus of the Circus" sketch, which supposedly was from Season 2.

Usually it was a new segment. In that episode with Hircus of the Circus, all the segments were reruns (not sure why- there are a handful of episodes like that- all of them were from late in the season). One episode that has a repeated sketch as a today on The Electric Company segment is ep 65B (not on any of the DVD sets, but I remember it distinctly because it was from the last season which was reran multiple times and also because it was unusual for featuring only 5 live action segments, only one of which was new (a cowboy sketch). The Today on the Electric Company segment was of Spiderman telling the Fox character "Yes". This episode also had quite a few first time segments with the redheaded claymation character Clayton acting as MC introducing the various sounds that were featured: "OW" the letter "X" and the silent "E". My guess is that the Spiderman segment looked more exciting than the cowboy sketch so it was used to lure in viewers.

From what I'd heard, Season 6 had very little new material produced; it was said that production for the season wrapped up after only 13 weeks.

Another one has come to mind: Episode 123A (not on DVD, though the preceding episode is.) That one featured the word "toast", from the "load of coal" skit—which was on Episode 502.

Yep- season 6 has less new material than any other season. In quite a few eps there were only 2 new segments or the only new segements are cast members acting as MCs to tell the viewers what phonetic sounds or letters or sight words to look out for in the segments. Rita Moreno was also in fewer segments in years 5-6 because she was doing other projects.
