Edith's crisis of faith

This is the one episode in which I hated her. I felt sorry for her cuz I liked Beverly a lot,but she didn't have to ruin Christmas. I understand she wasn't in the mood to celebrate but its God's son's birthday and you don't turn your back when your sitting down for prayer. She was very wrong to snub God!

Great episode though.

All I remember when I first watched that Christmas episode as a kid was how bad I wanted that Karate fighters game...

I'd still like to get it, Mc.

We had Rock'm Sock'm robots when me and my brothers were little, but we were a little rough and the heads came off.

I posted a thread about the probable death of Archie Bunker last year. Unfortunately it got taken down long while ago. It pertained to the contract dispute Carroll O'Connor had with Norman Lear around season five. Chances are if things didn't work out, Archie Bunker would have been killed off and more than likely they
would definitely of had this storyline of Edith losing her faith in religion at that point with Archie's death happening...

reply

Stretch was to move in with them if O'Connor hadn't returned. I don't know where he would've slept, though.

reply

Maybe he would have slept in the attic. I just can't quite picture the two of them singing Those Were The Days sitting at the piano though...

reply

That's a good point. Obviously a new opening sequence would've been created. Although it's questionable how many viewers would've continued watching.

reply

Hardly any. Archie was the show. Stretch was great in small doses, but he wouldn't have fared too well for an extended period of time.

reply

Which was exactly why the higher-ups gave in. Ironically, O'Connor almost threw in the towel anyway. CBS executive Fred Silverman sat in a bar with O'Connor, for hours apparently, and managed to talk him into returning.

reply

Perhaps they would have gone with the same musical intro that would eventually would be used for Archie Bunker's Place...

reply

It's best not to think about it. That would've been devastating to have tuned into season five's opening episode only to find a Carroll O'Connor-less intro (although that would've taken away the mystery of Archie being missing; we would've known at that point that we're never going to see him again).

reply

And tune right out. Lol.

reply

I tuned in to the first "Archie's Strike" episode. That would've been horrible to have had be the first "Archie's Missing" one. Damn glad that didn't happen.

reply

Cooler heads prevailed on that one.

reply

I'm sure if Lear had sole control over the situation, O'Connor would've been canned. But the network intervened. O'Connor and Lear didn't see eye-to-eye involving the show's production and often butted heads.

So, I heard.

O'Connor wanted to leave the show as early as season two, according to Rob Reiner. "We've done enough of these shows. Let's move on to something else".
O'Connor's personality was the exact opposite as Archie's, and he might not have felt comfortable playing the role. I guess he got more used to it as time went on.

reply

Enough to play him for 12 years, or whatever. Lol.

reply

And someone recently posted regarding an idea he had involving a show starring Archie where the whole episode would take place in the cab he was driving, talking with the passengers. I read about that myself.

reply

I posted that. Lol.
