Lucille Ball on All in the Family

Was it true that Lucille Ball hated All in the family and even wanted it taken off the air?

reply

Here's Lucy was still going strong when AITF premiered and Ball was outraged that such a "vulgar" show had turned up on "her" network. I don't know if she actively petitioned for the show to be taken off, but during the summer reruns of season one the show began to become a hit, so there wouldn't have been anything she could've done about it by then anyway.

reply

One blemish against Lucy. She loves Three's Company though.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

Yah, they stole the idea of having a famous celebrity narrate a clip show, as Henry Fonda had done with AITF.

reply

I wonder how Lucy felt about her friend Doris Singleton being on that vulgar show...

reply

I don't know, but did she in fact give Edith her chicken crockettes?

reply

I think she wound up putting them in Archie's lunchbox with a Twinkie...

reply

She might not have. That turned out to be her last day on the jury, but she didn't know that at the time.

reply

Then I suppose Arch would have had to settle for that chicken leg he threw in the drawer...



reply

More likely, Edith found it the next time she opened it.
Archie was probably eating out at work, on a hunger strike at home to draw sympathy.

reply

Were there other celebrities that hosted like best of for shows they enjoyed?

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

Can't think of any, at least while the show was still going. It mostly happens during retrospectives years after the show had stopped filming.

reply

Yeah, your probably right. Though, John McLaughlin hosted the Cheers 200 episode.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

I wouldn't have known that. Who the hell is John McGloughlin?

reply

He was like host of The John McLaughlin Group a political show not unlike Bill O'Reilly in the 70's and 80's.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

Who the hell is Bill O'Reilly? Lol.
I'm about as apolitical as you can get. This election year was different, as I was horrified at the thought of Hilary in the White House unless she was wearing a maid's uniform.

reply

Are you joking about Bill O'Reilly, though?

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

No. Name doesn't ring a bell.

reply

The O'Reilly Factor? Ever hear of that? That's his cable news show. Wrote all those Killing books. Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus, Killing Regan, etc.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

None of it rings a bell. I don't watch news shows (unless it's on ESPN or the like), and I don't hang out in bookstores.

reply

I don't watch it either, but I'm aware of it. And I certainly don't read, but I know about his books. You must live in a box.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

I shy away from political discussions. I have zero interest in it.

reply

The McLaughlin Group was still on the air until 4 months ago. It was cancelled a few days after John McLaughlin died in mid August. It had been on the air for 34 years.

I don't know what they have to say. It makes no difference anyway. Whatever it is, I'm against it.

reply

Really? Was he apart of It up til his death, or has he been out of it for years, and they just used the name?

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

He was still the host up until the week before he died. The only episode he didn't host in the 34 year history of the show was the one that aired the week before he died of prostate cancer. He was producer of the show from the beginning also, but stopped producing it in 2008. He was 89 when he died so he would have already been in his 80s when he stepped down as executive producer.

I don't know what they have to say. It makes no difference anyway. Whatever it is, I'm against it.

reply

Wow. I only knew of him because of Cheers.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

Seriously??? It was still on the air? I thought it had gone away YEARS ago. My grandparents used to watch it religiously (well, my grandmother more than my grandfather). I tried to watch it sometimes when they did, but I guess I was just too young. I couldn't understand it. Especially the opening with them calling out numbers.

Agreed, Sata.

reply

Lucille Ball was so overrated. All in the Family was a groundbreaking show.

reply

Eh. I like her.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

She was like Benny Hill - she only had one type of humor, as funny as it was.

reply

Stooges too. Doesn't that really go with everybody?

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

No, The Simpsons is pretty well-rounded.

reply

Well, there's a 100 different characters in the Simpsons.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

True.
And I still haven't seen any this season. I'm too disgusted at giving away my Comcast-owned DVR cable box that contained every new Simpsons episode from the past eight or nine seasons that won't be released on DVD for years to come.

reply

I haven't seen any from this season either, actually. Not overly interested any longer.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

Normally I would be, damn it I should've owned a real DVR.

reply

It's not half as good as it once was.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

That may be true, but still..

reply

I've moved on. Maybe its time you do as well.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

I'll get back to it, eventually. Especially if I dig out my Simpsons collection. I'll want to watch the newer ones afterwards. Sucks, though, that my current cable package doesn't include FXX. Just about all they show is The Simpsons.

reply

I could watch classic Simpsons all day.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

That's about how they air the show.

reply

FXX does.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

Day-long marathons.

reply

I just watched the first three episodes from the current season. Not bad.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

reply

It sucks because I have no recording devices.

reply

'I Love Lucy' writers, Bob Schiller and Bob Weiskopf also ended up writing for AITF.

reply

One of the reasons the show's dynamic had changed from the earlier seasons.

reply

You don't like those two, Fletch?

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

I wasn't putting in an opinion, just pointing out that there was a different feel to the show after those writers were hired. The earlier seasons were definitely edgier.

reply

Perhaps. But, it was still pretty damn funny.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

It was.

reply

What if Lucy's TV character had met the.Bunkers? Surely she was a much bigger dingbat than Edith!

reply

Lucille Ball was great in her day. But by 1971, she had been doing inferior television for years, shouting all her lines off cue cards, doing crappy production numbers, and fawning over C-list celebrities (Wayne Newton! Lawrence Welk!). She was not in any position to criticize other shows.

reply

They weren't C celebrties. At least not then.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

Lucy's screen character meeting the.Bunkers..
