Hands down, my favorite episode of the entire run...

"Everybody Tells the Truth". Ron Glass is magnificent, playing 3 different character profiles.

"Black is beautiful, Baby."

"Black is beautiful, Baby."

Ya appled all over my shirt! 

reply

I don't think Jack ever got his knife back from Edith...

reply

She probably got it back to Bob (the white guy).

reply

Everybody Tells the Truth was definitely a favorite episode. Ron Glass should of been arrested that day for stealing the show with his tremendous performance. I think that was the first and only time I've ever heard the word apple being used as a verb. I seriously would put that episode in my top 10 list possibly top five. As good as that episode is, my all time favorite All In The Family episode would definitely be Cousin Maude Visits...

Maude: That MAN had charisma!

Archie: I don't care if he was sick!

reply

I love the appled all over my shirt line.

RIP Matt Roberts. You were great.

reply

You're not suppose to touch a white man's shirt with a white man in it!

reply

Archie: "I never said that!".

reply

The only real minor critique I had of the episode was the unnecessary awkward close ups of their mouths being shown...

reply

They must've included descriptions of their mouths in their recounts.

reply

My minor critique with the episode was the way Glass laughed as the Uncle Tom character. A little over the top.

RIP Matt Roberts. You were great.

reply

His performance of that part was supposed to be over the top; it was Mike's exaggerated description that was being acted out there.

reply

I'm a big fan of rashomon episodes of sitcoms. They're usually my favorite episode of the series.

Mama's Family has an episode about Mama making gooseberry jam with Carol Burnett and Betty White. Eunice's recollection is my favorite. She turns to Naomi after Naomi says something air-headed, and Carol delivers a great slow burn, "Are you in there?"

Everybody Loves Raymond has an episode that involves a can opener. I like this one especially because I can never operate a can opener, especially if it doesn't create sharp edges. If I ever get tuna juice on me, I have to fight the urge to scream, "OH MY GOD. TUNA FISH!"

I Love Lucy is the earliest I remember. It's the one when Lucy and Ricky give Ethel and Fred a TV for their anniversary. Of course it breaks and they take it all the way to court!

reply

There's many shows that had episodes like that. Here is a few off the top of my head:

Gilligan's Island's Diogenes, Won't You Please Go Home? The castaways recall their views of the Japanese WW2 soldier.

Maude's The Case of the Broken Punch Bowl The characters recall through their side of the story on what happened.

King Of The Hill's A Fire-fighting We Will Go The guys recall through their side of the story on how the fire department got burned down.

Different Strokes' Rashomon II The characters give their sides of the story on how a burglar was foiled.

I'm sure there's many more that I've overlooked...

I wasn't aware of what that term meant until I looked it up. I'm trying to think of other examples in classic TV.

reply

The Good Times ep "Where There's Smoke" was like that too.

reply

I never knew it was a term either. Interesting. And duely noted, Fletch about his laugh.

RIP Matt Roberts. You were great.

reply

I noticed that the last episode that Antenna will air on the Saturday Summer Marathon of Small Wonder is a rashomon episode.

reply

Can someone give me the definition of rashomon, please? Sounds African.

RIP Matt Roberts. You were great.

reply

I tend to think it's Japanese-oriented, actually.

reply

Japanese would be the best origin. :)

Wikipedia has a pretty decent explanation and list of shows that used the effect:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rashomon_effect

Notice most of them are cartoons. It is a mad cap technique, which is why I like it!

reply

I'll take a gander. Thank you.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Matt Roberts. You were great.

reply

Better than looking it up to find out what "Rashomon" means, you could go back to legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's original film to see where the idea of a story told from diverse points of view began. You can probably find it on Youtube.

reply

There is a remake of "Rashomon": "The Outrage" (1964) starring Paul Newman. I wonder why most of Kurosawa's movies were remade as westerns.

Annoying the world since 1960!

reply

That's all we know in America at that time, I guess, Willie.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Matt Roberts. You were great.

reply

There's a line here that I also heard on "Good Times": when Archie is telling the part of the story where Jack gets the Apple juice on Archie's shirt, Jack says something like "This dude makes my jaw tight!" about Archie. James on "GT" used that phrase more than once. I wonder if that's a NY saying.

Annoying the world since 1960!

reply

I do not know. One of the greatest episodes of all time though.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Matt Roberts. You were great.

grits with cheese It's light but it binds.

suzycreamcheese RIP Heath Ledger 1979-2008

reply

"Cream of wheat with cheese, huh? Wrong again, Maude!", as Archie runs up to the toilet.

reply

Funny stuff.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

That episode I remember almost word for word. Hilarious.

reply

That's pretty good. One of your faves?

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

Ahh...
Probably not on my Top 25 list, but the whole show is basically a series of arguments. That's what makes it hilarious. And Maude does get Archie good. The way O'Connor covers his face when Maude says "You can either lay there or feed off your own fat. And if you choose the latter, you can probably lay there for months" - he's trying to keep a straight face.

reply

Know every line, but not in your top 25? Interesting.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

Actually I screwed that up.
It's "You can either come to the table and eat, or lay there and feed off your own fat".
It's one of the ones I had on audio cassette back in the '70s, although it was the syndicated version, so there are sections I'm less familiar with.

reply

Naturally. But the Maude one is great. Surprised it's not a top 25.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

Well, I never sat down and put one together, so it could be.

reply

I know you're busy a lot of times, but if you ever have 10, 15 minutes, I'd like to see your top 25.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

That's a monumental task. I'll think about it when I'm watching the discs.

reply

Just keep it in mind.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

I'll be starting soon.

reply

Have you watched the APB yet, or you saving that for last?

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

I have to watch it all chronologically.

reply

So, last.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

Yes.
Some of the bonus stuff might not be worth watching again, like the unseen Gloria pilot and that 704 Hauser episode.

reply

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about those.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

The interviews are interesting, but brief. The AITF biographies I have on VHS are much more informative.

reply

You prefer longer interviews?

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

Not in general, but the AITF ones have various actors, as well as Norman Lear, describing things.

reply

If everything can be said in a shorter interview, I don't mind it short.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

Those Biograpy-type things are great. They go through the whole series from start to finish. I also have the 25th Anniversary special that I recorded on tape the night it premiered.

reply

The Rocky biography was fantastic. Halloween too.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

I can't recall whether or not the third AITF documentary was a True Hollywood Story or its own entity, but it's great.

reply

Cheers has a wonderful TvOgraphy and E true Hollywood Story.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

Sometimes I watch those even if I'm not too into the show.

reply

They're very in depth.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

I've seen the one on Anna Nichole Smith.

reply

Yup. She was pretty hot back when.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

And quite the gold-digger.

reply

That's hilarious. One of the best episodes ever.
