Ben Murphy

i bought the series1 on DVD yesterday, as it has only recently been released in the uk, and it got me thinking...

i am fully aware that Peter Duel is the apple of many eyes and that he was in many cases the best loved of the actors-fair enough; however i feel that Ben Murphy's expression when it comes to any trouble is unrivalled. his smirk, almost a smoulder(sorry not sure on spelling) is absolutey fantastic in my opinion and just wondered what everyone else thought...?

reply

Well, I'm a Pete girl to the last, but Ben played his role just right, and the chemistry between them was such that neither would have had quite so much appeal without the other.

reply

You spelled 'smoulder' right--for the UK. We Yanks are frugal w/our 'U's. BTW, maybe you can tell me, where's the 'F' in 'lieutenant'? LOL.

I believe it's right next to the 'R' in Colonel.

Have you found the Effin' Lieutenant yet?

Given his Paul Newman-ish looks and easy charm, I was surprised that Ben Murphy never really went anywhere after AS&J.

They mostly come out at night . . . mostly . . .

reply

Probably because he didn't pursue it wholeheartedly. Playing tennis (very well) and chasing girls seemed to be of more interest to him than dedicating his time to capitalising on his acting career.

I'm sure that part of the reason Ben Murphy was cast as Kid Curry was because of his resemblence to Newman (even though Newman played the Heyes/Butch Cassidy role, not the the Sundance Kid/Curry role). However, I'm just now re-watching the show, and something about him -- more his delivery and expressions than his looks -- reminds me of Scott Bakula. Anyone else ever think that?

Yes, you are absolutely right! Without Ben, there would have been a definite HOLE in the greatest comedy-western of all time. I have always loved them equally. I understand Ben was teaching drama for awhile then went back to Jonesboro, Arkansas to live with his Mom. For 7 1/2 years we lived 25 miles NW of Jonesboro. Nice little town.
