why would a 50 style band be on a contemporary rock concert???

reply

Only Bowser would know!

Keith Moon was the greatest 'Keith Moon Style' drummer ever!!

reply

Actually, Bowser (aka Jon Bowman) was NOT at Woodstock. He joined the group in 1970.

Sha Na Na was not on the original Woodstock bill, but was added later to fill a few gaps in the performance schedule. The Moody Blues, Iron Butterfly and Jeff Beck Group were supposed to appear, but for one reason or another, could not make it. Therefore, Sha Na Na, who was known by producer Bill Graham, was given the go. And they did a great set!

Same with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. They weren't on the bill but their reputation in San Francisco and New York city helped seal the deal at Woodstock.

Plus the audience probably enjoyed hearing the 50s music; it reminded them when they were kids and listened to early rock and roll

reply

'50s style music was only a few years in the past. It didn't seem particularly archaic at that time.

reply

I enjoyed Sha Na Na's performance.

reply

Maybe they worked cheap or something.
I remember when I saw that movie Sha-na-na was the only act I really didn't care for.
They just didn't fit - and then they got on TV with their own show? Figure that one out.

reply

After Woodstock when Sha Na Na started touring the band would open up with Screamin Scott Simon telling the crowd " We got just one thing to say to you fucking hippies and that is rock and roll is here to stay." Kind of funny when you realize the hippie movement is what got them in the spotlight.
