What was your X/10 rating?

I gave this 8/10 – extremely provocative psychological study of relationships, beautiful filmed and expertly acted. The more I think about it, the more I want to watch it again and maybe rate it higher.

A solid 9/10 for me. Russell's direction is one of the most inspired, ground-breaking and genial a literary classic has ever received. My only minor complaint is that I'm not 100% satisfied with the female leads. Jennie Linden is the weak link in the cast IMO and, Oscar or not, Jackson isn't my idea of Gudrun either.

reply

Indeed. It's kind of ironic that a film called "Women in Love" would have such underdeveloped female leads, but I'm sure Ken Russell was trying to be ironic. I need to watch this again after his passing.

The idea that this mess might have won a best film category is very disheartening. However, I haven't seen any of the films it beat, so I think this was probably a very weak year for non-US English film.

As the time dragged on and on and on, I was desperately hoping WWII would break out, and they would all be killed by the Nazis, adding a welcome burst of colour to the thing.

These characters were all nothing more than selfish teenagers in adult form, but angsty for not even hormonal reasons. And the actors portraying them were uniformly ugly. If I have to look at naked people so much, it helps if they're pleasing to look at.

I did, however, like some of the cinematography, so it's not a complete waste.

I would say 7/10....interesting, and beautifully photographed/acted...but not really that illuminating.

I kind of don't get the point of what we're to be left with. "Love Sucks"?

Or should it be called Men in Hate rather than Women in Love? That's sort of what we see more of.

A strong 8 for me! Such a beautifully constructed and realized film with wonderful performances by everyone involved. It's truly a work of art!

I gave it an 8, though it was probably a bit closer to a 7, but there were some things that I felt pushed it a bit higher, like Oliver Reed and Ken Russel. Without having read any of DH Lawrence's books, I must say it seems like he is not very impressed with women in general, and felt that they were spoiled emotional children with no real problems. Meanwhile the men had so much going on in their heads, they thought WAY more than most guys ever do. But I'm sure that's what it was like with him and his rich arty friends, and the women he had to deal with who attached themselves to those men.

I found it mostly boring and I couldn't finish it.
