Just wondering?

WHEN was the name changed???? I kept looking for this title "Where's Papa" and could not find it. I guess Going Ape refers to the running Ape suite gag!!! This is F&^*$@# STUPID! Give this movie it's title BACK!!!!

Well, it's 'Poppa', not 'Papa'. That helps.
Hope this'll help. I bought a DVD, in the last couple of years, with the original title.
Mine has both endings, too.

NOT changed back. Just heard about this today. What a STUPID name. (And yes, I know the story.)

When did this happen, and more importantly... WHY??

It only served to make it difficult to find on imdb. Even when I saw the name under Ruth Gordon's credits, I didn't recognize it as an alternate title for "Where's Poppa". I had to go to George Segals' credits to search for a movie in which they were castmates in order to come to the correct listing for this film.

STILL, no one has explained the title change. The title of the novel was 'Where's Poppa?''Going Ape' is pointless.

I think the name change had something to do with the disappointing box office, which is the reason ACE IN THE HOLE became THE BIG CARNIVAL. At least WHERE'S POPPA is the title that stuck for decades, unlike the Billy Wilder film which only in the last few years has the original title become imprinted on people's brains.
